When trust is exploited

The more useful and familiar an assistant becomes, the more consequential a breach of that trust can be.

Trust is a capability

People lower their guard around systems that repeatedly save time and communicate calmly. That earned trust can become a security asset—or an attack surface—because a familiar assistant can make risky actions feel routine.

02

How exploitation might appear

The threat is not limited to a dramatic takeover. It may include compromised plugins, poisoned sources, deceptive links, silent policy changes, or recommendations influenced by undisclosed commercial arrangements.

  • Urgency that discourages independent checking.
  • Requests for secrets, payments, downloads, or account access.
  • Claims of certainty without inspectable evidence.
  • A sudden change in tone, permissions, or recommended services.
03

Use calibrated trust

Let AI assist with reversible, low-risk work. Add confirmation steps for money, identity, health, legal matters, security settings, and external communications. Never treat conversational confidence as proof of authority.
